Last night I was watching the movie Puss ‘N Boots and in the movie Humpty Dumpty was chasing his dreams of finding the magic beans that would grow the bean stalk into the sky to the land where the giant kept the goose that laid the golden egg. I was trying to create a speech out of the story line of the movie, something based on the New Year and resolutions. I was suffering from writer’s block unable to make a connection. The thought that kept going through my head was “why is this so difficult?”
I have long believed in the K.I.S.S. principle, Keep It Simple Stupid. There I was trying to make complicated connections. Oh yes they could be made but at what cost vs. what benefit. I had to stop and give myself advice I give others all the time, remember to breath. I closed eyes and took a slow deep breath.
I learned a long time ago to only give speeches on things I know and am familiar with. This falls in the realm of keeping it simple. I know very little about making New Year’s Resolutions as I have not made one in over 30 years. This may seem trite but I implore you to try to do something that you have little experience with, no matter how simple it is to others.
Humpty had been researching and studying the story of Jack and the Bean Stalk from when he was very young into his adult life. He was also a very brilliant individual capable of creating flying machines and such. Yet with all of this knowledge he forgot to breath and created a very complicated scheme to get the goose so he could have the golden eggs. Because of this he ended up losing his family and became a bank robber of his home town bank. His complicated goals were costing him everything.
At the end of the story his whole world had collapsed, he fell off the wall and cracked his shell. His brother, Puss, found him where he fell and what did he find? He found that Humpty was a golden egg under his shell. In other words, Humpty was what he had so desperately sought.
For me after taking a deep breath and listening to my own advice to keep it simple, I told this story for my speech.
We all go through life making resolutions and looking for our goose that lays the golden eggs not realizing the riches that reside in each and every one of us. I leave you with these words or magic beans remember K.I.S.S. and take time to breath.
